Sapphire is the September Birthstone & the 45th & 65th wedding anniversary stone. It is a Precious stone & as so belongs to the most exclusive group of gems. It is a variety of a Corundum gem family & its stunning color is caused by Iron & Titanium. Sapphire comes in many different grades, some are translucent & opaque - normally the clearer grades are worth many thousands of dollars . The name Sapphire originates from Greek word “sappheiros”, which probably referred to lapis lazuli (which is gemstone of blue color).
-Sapphire has been associated with royalty, which was strengthen when Prince Charles proposed to Lady Diana in 1981 with the famous Sapphire Ring.
-Kings & queens of ancient Rome & Greece believed that blue sapphires would protect them from envy & harm.
-In ancient Greece and Rome, kings and queens were convinced that blue sapphires protected their owners from envy and harm.
-The church during the Middle Ages wore this gemstone as a symbol of Heaven, while ordinary people believed that sapphire attracted heavenly blessings.
-People also believed that sapphires have the power to guard chastity, make peace between enemies, influence spirits and reveal the secrets of oracles.
